Uncanny Valley #1: THUFFERIN’ THUCCOTASH!

Reviewed by Seth Adrian Romo

Uncanny Valley #1 is a fun and creative series premiere that will have readers grinning by the end of the issue. It’s unique and makes perfect use of the comic book medium.

Following a boy named Oliver, readers quickly learn that his unexplained “cartoonish” abilities are about to turn his world upside down.

The story feels reminiscent of family-friendly adventure films of the 80s. There’s a sense of wonder and youthful energy in Oliver’s tale and it’s easy to find him and his mom likable as a small family unit trying to make their situation work.

Written by Tony Fleecs, the character introduction and plot are well crafted making for a tight story. Part of the narrative involves different visuals mixing and Dave Wachter brings the whole experience together with the dual art styles equally standing out on the page. Pat Brosseau’s letters also shape the story and visuals as every BOOM! and FWOOSH has perfectly stylized use.

There’s a sense of nostalgia with this series premiere as the style is similar to Looney Tunes cartoons matched with more Americana painting. Similar to properties like Space Jam, this duality of styles is visually stunning and refreshing and the hook by the end of the story makes for an exciting read. There is so much potential with where this story can go, and if subsequent issues are anything like this first entry, readers are in for an awesome ride.

Final Verdict

From the story, to the combined art styles, the creative team has put together a fantastic first issue that is as entertaining as it is intriguing. This adventure tale has a strong premise that is certainly going to take readers for a wild ride.
