The Last Wardens #2: Chaos on Every Corner
Reviewed by Seth Adrian Romo
The Last Wardens #2 is a fast-paced read full of talking chickens, monstrosities and horrors in the small town of Bleakwood.
Danny Pryor has discovered her presumed-dead brother only for his return to bring a horrific blob-like creature that has engulfed their childhood home. When a ragtag group of paranormal warriors arrive, their unorthodox ways create more problems as they try to stop the monster.
Writers Amit Tishler and Elliot Sperl have crafted a solid second issue to their series premiere, giving readers lots of puzzle pieces to hold onto and see what begins to fit together.
The narrative of this comic very much acts like a companion to Danny’s experience and this allows readers to receive just enough exposition and see the larger picture without removing any of the mystery. It’s clear that the crew of “The Last Wardens” lack coordination, and their inability to control the situation bleeds into Danny’s life further as the red goo-like monster heads to Bleakwood.
The illustrations from Rui Silveira and colors by Francesco Segala continue to work well together and while a lot of the issue takes place from inside of the creature, the action is given a moment to be front and center as the crew fight thorn-like monsters and stumble from the unstable ground. Details continue to be a component of the visuals and keen eyes will likely see small details that showcase the attention put into making this issue.
While readers shouldn’t expect too much to be revealed, the chaos has an endearing design to it giving an experience that is entertaining. Hopefully issue 3 will take a moment to delve deeper into who The Last Wardens are as their designs and personalities evoke a need to want to know more about them.
Final Verdict
Whereas most follow-up issues take a moment to slow down, The Last Wardens #2 leaves readers breathless as every page cranks up the chaos and horror like an amp at full volume.
