King Spawn #37 delivers an action-packed experience full of relentless bullets and destruction from beginning to end.

Grannie Blake—the moral compass of the Spawn Universe—has been kidnapped, and Spawn must work with an old acquaintance to take on a formidable group of adversaries. Though the cybernetic gorilla hasn’t been seen since King Spawn #2, Cy-gor returns with a bombastic entrance.

Told primarily through narration, this issue largely acts as a continuous action sequence to get Spawn and Cy-gor a little closer to their final goal. While this isn’t inherently negative, readers shouldn’t expect much exposition and will likely have to fill in the gaps themselves.

Written by Todd McFarlane, this issue is still enjoyable for what it is—bullets and brawling. Arguably, the plot is a little thin and might feel like a vehicle to have an action packed issue, but the visuals shine and reward readers giving this issue a chance.

Fortunately, Yildiray Cinar (illustrator) and Ivan Nunes (colorist) craft a stunning experience that it almost feels like a distraction when the narrator’s words pop up. This is not to say the lettering is subpar, but the minimal dialogue lets the panels filled with blood, punches, and bright lights from flying bullets drive this issue.

Don’t expect any game-changing moments, but rather, a solid issue that is entertaining with strong action at its core.

Final Verdict

The Spawn Universe has always been about visually stunning set pieces, and this issue is no exception. As always, King Spawn is a thrill-ride of violence and mayhem giving readers epic panels to root and cheer for.
