Trading Pages: New Releases for 12/4/24
Supernatural outlaws, secret CIA facilities, and wealthy world-ruling families dominate the latest trades hitting shelves. Here’s what’s new in this week’s Trading Pages.
Instead of numerical scores, reviews are categorized as: Must Read, Consider It, or Maybe Pass.
Ain’t No Grave - Image Comics
A multi-layered supernatural western, this mini-series from Skottie Young and Jorge Corona is one of the best comics of 2024. It follows Ryder, an ex-outlaw turned mother, who decides to hunt “Death” after receiving news of a terminal illness in order—hoping to steal more time with her daughter and husband. This moody story isn’t just visually stunning, but offers poignant and thought-provoking moments throughout making each read richer and richer.
Verdict: Must Read
Money - Dark Horse Comics
The Illuminati is real and consists of five hyper-rich families in this political thriller. While the concept of power struggles can be enjoyable, this first volume falls short of delivering a unique hook for readers. The plot relies on revenge-fueled predictable set pieces and relies on style over substance. Perhaps future installments will better showcase the magnitude of world-shaking families whose wealth can move mountains.
Verdict: Maybe Pass
Drive Like Hell - Dark Horse Comics
When a car from hell is stolen for a heist, a thief and his companion find themselves on the run—not just from the law, but the Devil himself. In what feels like one giant car chase, this comic book from writer Rich Douek and artist Alex Cormack doesn’t take itself too seriously and instead gives readers a story full of monsters, mayhem, and super-fast cars. Don’t expect a complicated plot, but instead blast your favorite AC/DC track as rubber hits the road.
Verdict: Consider It
Black Sight - Dark Horse Comics
In what is arguably Stephanie Phillips’ most visceral and raw title of late, this self-contained comic book terrifyingly illustrated by Conor Boyle engulfs readers in its mystery and horror and doesn’t let up until its final pages. Centered around a woman named Alexis Greer traveling solo in the 1960s, her reality is shattered when she is suspected of murder and sent to a CIA black site. There are lots of questions to be asked with this title, but maybe not every door should be opened.
Verdict: Must Read
