The Last Wardens #3 ramps up the blood and body count as the horror and tension rises between the Wardens and the citizens of Bleakwood.

After Danielle Pryor’s presumed-to-be-dead brother returns home and transforms into a grotesque creature, the paranormal misfits known as ‘The Wardens’ scramble to clean up the mess. Despite their best efforts, the monster’s wrath spreads into the nearby town putting Danny’s friends at risk.

Destruction and mayhem continue as Issue #3 picks up right where Issue #2 left off. Danny, her friends, and unlucky townsfolk are caught in the crosshairs as the monster’s red vein-like extensions grow onto walls and floors.

Over the past two issues, Danny (and the readers) have received little information about the paranormal team and finally brief crumbs of information are given—although don’t expect much. It’s clear writers Amit Tishler and Elliot Sperl enjoy keeping the mystery and fortunately there is more than enough story and visuals to keep readers entertained.

Additionally, Danny’s character has noticeably grown since she was first introduced and this issue gives her character an opportunity to take more of a lead. Whether or not it helps (or if people die) remains to be seen, but it’s clear she is finally taking charge of her life.

Visually, this issue is striking. The red tones from the veins dominate the panels and Rui Silveira’s art is dynamic and terrifying in different scenes. Horror fans are likely to notice nods to Evil Dead in the way the creature creeps and jumps out unexpectedly. Francesco Segala’s colors are the highlight of this issue as fall colors, blood, and a possessed cartoon ghost each are given moments to shine.

Final Verdict

From start to finish The Last Wardens #3 is wild, energetic, and the development of Danny is much appreciated. While there is still more to be discovered about the team or how the monster came to be, this issue makes progress in giving more details. The Last Wardens #3 doesn’t hold back as it leaves a blood trail of violence and horror. It’s certainly not for the faint of heart.
