Orphans of the Impact Winter #3: Mind Your Step
Reviewed by Seth Adrian Romo
Orphans of the Impact Winter #3 is sure to pull at heartstrings as this epic journey continues.
Over the past two issues, Chuck and his dog Addie have been doing their best to navigate a post-apocalyptic land. After meeting a group of kids headed to Minnetonka in the previous issue, Chuck’s internal conflict of leaving his hometown is put at the forefront forcing him to make a decision.
Written by Lee A. Carlisle, the script continues to be near perfect as each chapter has had a purpose without overstuffing the issues with unnecessary dialogue or exposition. This issue is no different as the panels without words still manage to tell a story that is worth experiencing.
There’s no mistaking this series as an easy story—in fact the two art styles serve as a way for Chuck to process the horrors that exist around him. This is contrasted against a bleak color palette that shows the reader the harsh reality of a broken world. Artist Ross Carlisle and colorist Marina Goncalves are a power house artistic team and their visuals perfectly balance the script in storytelling design.
As of this review, the series is released exclusively on ComiXology and all available issues can be accessed here.
Final Verdict
This issue may be dark and emotional, but it retains an underlying sense of hope that shines brightly against a desolate earth. From the script to the dual art styles, this comic continues to set a high standard in storytelling.
